Never underestimate the power of doing something wrong.

First lessons are often the most memorable. Mine lingered in my mind as well as on my left cheek. Afterward, we were dismissed for the rest of the day. I retreated to my room to allow my body and my ego to heal.

As soon as I lay down, I recalled the events that had transpired over the last twenty-four hours. I’d been chased, kidnapped, and rescued. I’d lost new friends and found old ones. I learned about a group of people who were attempting to bring humanity down by eradicating Music. And now I was being told it was time to start combating them, but I didn’t know how we were supposed to do it. I was curious as to what other preparations were in store. So far, I’d only been slapped in the face. It was a whirlwind of a day. After all I’d been through, I sure didn’t feel ready for a battle.

I sank deep into the mattress, clinging tightly to my mother’s handmade quilt. It felt like only minutes had passed when I was awakened by Sifu’s valiant voice at the brutal hour of six a.m. The announcement echoed from the other room that we’d be starting in thirty minutes. I hurried out of bed and walked straight to the kitchen for a satisfying cup of juice. I never liked the flavor of toothpaste mixed with juice, so I’d formed the bad habit of quenching my thirst before taking care of my dental hygiene. (I keep telling myself that I will reverse the order one day.)

Other than Sifu, I seemed to be the only one awake, or at least the only one up and about. I hadn’t seen anyone as I walked into the kitchen. The door to the bathroom was open but it was empty. I glanced back into the living room but still didn’t see anyone. Where was everybody? Someone had to have slept on the couch. A blanket was still lying on the floor. Not even Sifu was present.

Being careful to keep my noise to a minimum, I grabbed my cup and quickly walked back to my room to get dressed. Maybe everyone was outside and I was running late? It hadn’t felt like thirty minutes had passed, but I knew how time could seem to fluctuate when I was sleepy.

I’d just closed my bedroom door when I realized I’d felt very little pain during my walk to and from the kitchen. My legs moved easily and my arms didn’t hurt at all. I still had a few scrapes, but they no longer hurt unless I pressed on them, which, for some reason, I kept doing. No amount of sleep could’ve made me feel so good so quickly. I knew something must have happened, or more accurately, someone must have done something.

Years ago, I’d witnessed Michael and Uncle Clyde heal a man who’d been hit by a car. They’d done it, primarily, by singing to him.
